SUMMARY:Non-surgical options for shoulder pain
DESCRIPTION:Do you suffer from shoulder pain? Are you considering a surgical intervention to relieve shoulder pain? Looking for alternatives to shoulder surgery?\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the Sellers Sports Medicine & Family Practice team at Spooner Old Town for a FREE community event focused on non-surgical relief for shoulder pain. Dr Joel Sellers & Dr. Tom Sellers will discuss alternatives to invasive surgery\, including the use of Orthobiologics and PRP Therapy concerning the treatment of mild arthritis\, muscle sprains\, tears\, ligament issues\, and tendon issues with a focus on the shoulder. \n\n\n\nWHEN: MAY 22ND at 6:00 PM \n\n\n\nWHERE: Spooner Old Town OR VIRTUAL \n\n\n\nSpooner Old Town7555 E Osborn Rd Unit 200Scottsdale\, AZ 85251 \n\n\n\nJoin us in person at Spooner Old Town OR online via Zoom. A Zoom link will be sent to all participants who elect to attend virtually\, prior to the event. \n\n\n\nOrthobiologics are substances that Sports Medicine doctors like Dr. Sellers use to help injuries heal more quickly. They are used to improve the healing of broken bones and injured muscles\, tendons\, and ligaments. These products are often made from substances that are naturally found in your body. When they are used in higher concentrations\, they may help speed up the healing process. \n\n\n\nPlatelet-rich plasma therapy\, or PRP therapy. Platelets are components of our own blood that have the ability to promote healing in an area of injury or pain. Platelet-rich plasma therapy\, or PRP therapy\, involves the injection of the patient’s own concentrated source of platelets in order to stimulate the body’s own healing of damaged tissue. PRP therapy does not involve surgery and is typically used to treat arthritis\, muscle sprains\, tears\, ligament issues\, and tendon issues. \n\n\n\nHigh-level athletes have used PRP therapy for many years in order to accelerate healing when dealing with pain or injury. Recent advancements in the field of orthobiologic medicine have made it possible to offer these innovative procedures to all patients who are good candidates. \n\n\n\nRSVP TODAY\n\n\n\nHow does PRP Therapy Work?\n\n\n\nThe procedure begins by obtaining a sample of the patient’s blood. The sample is then placed in a high-spinning centrifuge machine. The spinning separates the blood into different components: red blood cells and plasma. Within the plasma layer are the platelets. After a second spin in the centrifuge\, we concentrate and isolate the platelets.  \n\n\n\nA concentrated source of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is then injected into and around the injured or damaged tissue. The concentrated source of platelets promotes the natural healing of damaged ligaments\, cartilage\, tendons and joints.. \n\n\n\nAt Sellers Sports Medicine\, our PRP is concentrated enough that the patient only needs one injection\, no need for a series of multiple injections for the same treatment.  \n\n\n\nThe entire process takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes.  \n\n\n\nPRP therapy can be used to treat a wide range of conditions and injuries associated with the shoulder\, elbow\, wrist\, hand\, hip\, knee\, ankle\, and foot. See more below. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLearn more\n\n\n\nTo learn more about Dr Joel Sellers & Dr. Tom Sellers and Sellers Sports Medicine & Family Practice\, please visit: sellerssportsmed.com \n\n\n\nTo learn more about services offered by the Sellers Sports Medicine & Family Practice team\, please visit: sellerssportsmed.com/#services \n\n\n\nFollow Sellers Sports Medicine & Family Practice on social media: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Refreshments and light snacks will be available for all in attendance.

SUMMARY:Preventing and Treating Ankle Sprains & Shin Splints in Youth Athletes
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE community event at Spooner Ocotillo! \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an insightful evening with Dr. Vanousheh Ghandhari\, DPM\, FACFAS focused on Prevention and Treatment of Ankle Sprains and Shin Splints in Youth Athletes \n\n\n\nWHENJune 4\, 2024 at 6:00 PM \n\n\n\nWHERESPOONER OCOTILLO4955 S. Alma School Rd.\, Suite 16Chandler\, AZ 85248 \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Highlights:\n\n\n\n\nInsightful Presentation: Learn from Dr. Ghandhari’s in-depth knowledge and experience in the field of podiatry and sports medicine.\n\n\n\nPractical Tips: Discover practical strategies for preventing and treating ankle sprains and shin splints in youth athletes.\n\n\n\nQ&A Session: Get your questions answered directly by Dr. Ghandhari during the interactive Q&A session.\n\n\n\n\nAnkle SprainsAnkle sprains are one of the most common injuries in youth athletes. They occur frequently due to the combination of physical activity\, rapid movements\, and sometimes inadequate conditioning or training techniques. According to various studies and sports medicine organizations\, ankle sprains account for a significant portion of sports-related injuries among young athletes\, with estimates ranging from 15% to 45% of all sports injuries. This prevalence underscores the importance of education\, prevention strategies\, and proper treatment methods\, as addressed in events like the one featuring Dr. Vanousheh Ghandhari. \n\n\n\nShin Splints \n\n\n\nShin splints are also a common concern among youth athletes\, particularly those engaged in activities involving repetitive impact on the lower legs\, such as running\, jumping\, or sports like basketball and soccer. While estimates vary\, studies suggest that shin splints account for a significant proportion of overuse injuries in young athletes\, ranging from 4% to 35% of all sports-related injuries. \n\n\n\nFactors contributing to the prevalence of shin splints include biomechanical issues\, inadequate footwear\, training errors (such as sudden increases in intensity or duration)\, and playing surfaces. Proper conditioning\, appropriate footwear\, gradual training progression\, and addressing biomechanical issues can help reduce the risk of shin splints in youth athletes. \n\n\n\nEvents like the one featuring Dr. Vanousheh Ghandhari provide valuable insights into prevention and treatment strategies to help young athletes stay healthy and perform at their best while minimizing the risk of injuries like shin splints. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Vanousheh Ghandhari\, DPM\, FACFAS\, is a renowned podiatrist specializing in sports medicine\, currently practicing at Ocotillo Foot & Ankle. With years of experience and expertise\, Dr. Ghandhari is dedicated to helping athletes achieve peak performance while minimizing the risk of injury. \n\n\n\nDr. Ghandhari is board certified in Foot Surgery and Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. She is an active member and President (2022-Present) of the Arizona Foot and Ankle Medical Association\, and a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. She is affiliated with Chandler Regional Medical Center in Phoenix and the Arizona Orthopedic & Surgical Specialty Hospital. \n\n\n\nDr. Ghandhari specializes in: \n\n\n\n\nRearfoot and ankle reconstruction\n\n\n\nFoot and ankle fractures\n\n\n\nLapiplasty bunionectomy\n\n\n\nTotal ankle replacement \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP TODAY!\n\n\n\n\n \n \n EVENT RSVP –Ankle Sprains and Shin Splints – Spooner Ocotillo\n \n \n Δ\n \n \n\n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Guest Name\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Please skip if not planning to bring a guest.Email*\n \n We will use your email to send event reminders and other important information from Spooner and Arthritis Foundation.Cell Phone*Complimentary Movement AssessmentWould you like the Spooner team to reach out to you directly to schedule a Complimentary Movement Assessment?*\n \n Yes\n \n \n No\n Media ReleaseI grant permission to Spooner and its agents and employees the irrevocable and unrestricted right to reproduce the photographs and/or video images taken of me\, for the purpose of publication\, promotion\, illustration\, advertising\, or trade\, in any manner or in any medium. SUMMARY:MSKU-2: Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound of the Lower Extremities
DESCRIPTION:Course Description:\n\n\n\nDiagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSKU) is an evidence-based\, cost-efficient\, imaging modality. MSKU has diagnostic accuracy comparable to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for common soft tissue pathology\, including enthesopathy\, tendinopathy\, ligament pathology\, joint pathology\, and compressive neuropathies of the lower extremities. Licensed healthcare professionals including physical therapists (PT)\, medical doctors (MD)\, osteopathic doctors (DO)\, Chiropractors (DC)\, physician assistants (PA)\, and nurse practitioners (NP) meet the educational requirements to practice MSKU and work towards the prerequisites needed to sit for the national registry exam in musculoskeletal sonography (RMSK). \n\n\n\nThis two-day live diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound course includes 70% hands-on practical training and 30% didactic instruction. SUMMARY:SMT-1: High-Velocity Low-Amplitude Thrust Manipulation of the Cervical\, Thoracic\, Lumbar & Sacroiliac Joints
DESCRIPTION:SMT-1: High-Velocity Low-Amplitude Thrust Manipulation of the Cervical\, Thoracic\, Lumbar & Sacroiliac Joints\n\n\n\nCourse Description:\n\n\n\nThis two-day spinal manipulation course includes 70% hands-on practical training and 30% didactic lecture instruction. This spinal manipulation course focuses on the technical and practical hands-on skills required to perform high-velocity\, low-amplitude thrust spinal manipulation techniques in a competent and safe manner for all of the spinal regions. We have taught more PTs\, MDs and ATCs the art and science of spinal manipulation than any other institute (in the world!). In fact\, most instructors of other spinal manipulation programs are graduates from Spinal Manipulation Institute. Learn from the source\, the worldwide leaders in spinal manipulation education\, research and practice. \n\n\n\nNo prerequisites are needed for this 2-day course in spinal manipulation; however\, registrants must be a licensed PT (or final year DPT\, DC\, or MD students)\, ATC\, DO\, MD\, DC\, NP\, or PA in their respective state or country. The SMT-1 course is approved for 15-hours by FSBPT (ProCert)\, BOC (NATA)\, APTA\, TPTA\, and the respective State PT Board. \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn HVLA thrust manipulation techniques for the following articulations: C0-1 (occipito-atlantal joint)\, C1-2 (atlanto-axial joint)\, C2-7 (mid and lower cervical segments)\, C7-T3 (cervicothoracic junction)\, upper ribs 1\, 2 and 3 (costotransverse & costovertebral joints)\, T4-9 (mid-thoracic facet articulations)\, T10-L1 (thoracolumbar junction)\, L2-4 (mid-lumbar spine facets)\, L5-S1 (lumbosacral junction)\, and the SI (sacroiliac) joint. \n\n\n\nCurrent evidence will also be presented that underpins the use of spinal manipulation for cervicogenic headaches\, cervicothoracic dysfunction\, shoulder pain and upper rib syndromes\, acute and chronic low back pain\, sacroiliac joint dysfunction\, and mechanical neck pain. \n\n\n\nWhere: Spooner Uptown Chandler1351 N. It often results from overuse\, especially in activities that involve running or jumping. Symptoms typically include pain and stiffness at the back of the ankle\, which may worsen with activity. \n\n\n\nPeroneal Tendinopathy: This condition affects the peroneal tendons located on the outer side of the lower leg. These tendons help stabilize the ankle and foot during movement. Peroneal tendinopathy can cause pain and swelling along the outer ankle\, particularly with activities that involve ankle rotation or lateral movements. \n\n\n\nBoth conditions can significantly impact mobility and athletic performance. Understanding the underlying causes\, symptoms\, and treatment options is crucial for effective management and recovery. \n\n\n\nAbout Dr. Kelsie Effrein:\n\n\n\nDr. Kelsie Effrein is a board-qualified foot and ankle specialist at On The Move Podiatry. SUMMARY:PGP: The Pelvic Girdle Puzzle
DESCRIPTION:Course Description \n\n\n\nPGP is offering a broad introduction to the Functional Manual Therapy® system of patient care with an intensive focus on the anatomical region of the pelvis. This two-day\, 16-contact-hour lab course blends material from a spectrum of the core curriculum courses and then expands upon that material\, providing additional techniques and concepts not presented in the core curriculum classes. PGP is designed to meet the needs of both individuals new to IPA and those seeking to expand their knowledge beyond the core curriculum of IPA. \n\n\n\nIn the IPA Functional Manual Therapy® (FMT) paradigm\, the pelvis functions as the central axis of both movement and stability\, creating far-reaching influences on movement. Therefore\, one must understand and assess the full-body impact of pelvic structure and function to optimize human motion and stability. \n\n\n\nPGP explores the biomechanical and functional impact of the pelvis on the kinetic chain both above and below the pelvis. Through demonstration and supervised lab sessions\, the participant will develop advanced skills in evaluation\, differentiation of mechanical\, neuromuscular\, and motor control dysfunctions\, and implementation of an appropriate plan of care and utilization of Functional Mobilization techniques to treat identified dysfunctions. Systematic functional and structural pre and post-assessments objectify the effectiveness of each intervention. The systematic FMT® treatment approach instructed in all IPA courses allows for seamless transitions between evaluation and treatment of identified impairments as an ongoing process in a session-to-session (reflection-on-action) and moment-to-moment (reflection-in-action) basis.

SUMMARY:SMT-2: Cervicothoracic Dysfunction and Cervicogenic Headaches: Diagnosis & Management
DESCRIPTION:2-Day: 8:00am – 5:00pm \n\n\n\nSMT-2 is a two-day (15 contact hours) course with an emphasis on upper cervical\, mid-cervical and upper thoracic spine dysfunction\, as it relates to cervicogenic headaches\, whiplash associated disorders\, and idiopathic neck pain diagnosis and management. \n\n\n\nAdvanced HVLA thrust manipulation techniques for the occipito-atlantal (C0/1)\, atlanto-axial (C1/2)\, C2/3 articulations (in supine and sitting positions) along with a focus on 1st\, 2nd and 3rd rib articulation HVLA thrust manipulation procedures (costotransverse and costovertebral articulations). A special emphasis will also be given to a variety of HVLA thrust manipulation procedures used to treat the cervicothoracic junction (C7-T3) including side-lying\, prone\, sitting and supine variations of such. \n\n\n\nAn evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and management of deep cervical flexor dysfunction will be undertaken; in addition\, the best way to train the deep neck flexors will be instructed. Furthermore\, the inter-relationship between arthrogenic muscle inhibition of the craniocervical flexors and the immediate changes in motor control post HVLAT manipulation of specifically the upper cervical spine (C0/1 and C1/2) articulations will be explored. \n\n\n\nA comprehensive literature review of the neurophysiological effects of HVLAT manipulation will be presented and will include evidence to support alterations post-HVLAT manipulation in feed-forward activation times\, isometric muscle strength\, resting EMG activity of segmentally associated muscles\, and passive range of motion. An exploration of pain physiology as it applies specifically to post manipulation hypoalgesic effects will be presented\, and an overview of the sympathoexcitatory effects seen in the upper limbs following spinal manipulation will be explored. \n\n\n\nCurrent research (RCTs and systematic reviews) to support the effectiveness of HVLAT and exercise in the treatment of cervicogenic headaches\, idiopathic neck pain and whiplash associated disorders will be presented. This course is 70% hands-on and 30% didactic instruction. SMT-1 must be completed prior to taking SMT-2.

That is\, peri-neural dry needling and needle puncture of tendons\, ligaments\, musculotendinous junctions\, teno-osseous junctions\, and bone (i.e. “periosteal pecking”) will also be taught as essential components of musculoskeletal needling practice. More specifically\, peri-neural and peri-vascular dry needling will be instructed for the purpose of improving microcirculation and disrupting fibrosis in chronic neurogenic pain conditions (e.g. an impacted median nerve in carpal tunnel syndrome). Dry needling is certainly a lot more than sticking needles in trigger points! \n\n\n\nDry needling will be taught within the framework of western musculoskeletal diagnoses\, not within the theoretical framework of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)\, and not for the purpose of altering the flow of Qi or energy along traditional Chinese meridians. More specifically\, the participant will learn evidence-based guidelines\, recommended “point” locations\, and dosages for the use of dry needling in the treatment of specific neuromusculoskeletal conditions (not just individual muscles!) including: whiplash-associated disorders\, cervicogenic headaches\, tension-type headaches\, migraine headaches\, rib syndromes\, facet joint syndromes\, cervical radiculopathy\, mechanical neck pain\, carpal tunnel syndrome\, shoulder impingement syndrome\, lateral epicondylalgia\, and temporomandibular dysfunction. In addition\, the most recent evidence underpinning the mechanical\, hypoalgesic (central\, segmental\, peripheral)\, neurophysiologic\, chemical\, and hormonal effects of dry needling will be presented. \n\n\n\nBrain imaging studies have demonstrated that dry needling of “key” distal points (not trigger points)\, that are not “onsite” with the patient’s symptoms\, stimulates the descending pain inhibitory systems or cortical areas of the brain that are involved in pain control. Furthermore\, much of the literature that “dry needling” draws from uses the term “acupuncture” in its title\, and many of these studies have used both traditional acupuncture points and myofascial trigger points in their treatment regimes. Thus\, a foundational knowledge of the nomenclature and the location of several key traditional acupuncture points will be discussed on this course to help the clinician understand and interpret the existing biomedical acupuncture and dry needling literature within the context of neuromusculoskeletal conditions. However\, this course in dry needling does not constitute training\, of any kind\, in the practice of traditional Chinese acupuncture or Oriental Medicine. More specifically\, this course does not teach participants to needle acupuncture points within traditional Chinese meridians. \n\n\n\nFor the management of headache\, cervical\, thoracic\, and upper extremity pain syndromes\, dry needling will be taught as one part of the treatment package\, but not the only part. That is\, the most recent literature clearly supports the inclusion of upper cervical and/or cervicothoracic HVLA thrust manipulation for the effective treatment of TMJ disorders\, subacromial pain syndrome and cervicogenic headaches. More specifically\, upper cervical manipulation has been found to reduce headache frequency\, intensity\, duration\, and disability associated with cervicogenic headaches in the short and long-term. Additionally\, upper cervical spinal manipulation and dry needling have been found effective at reducing pain and improving active mouth opening in patients with TMD. Nevertheless\, within the emerging literature\, the combination of spinal manipulation and dry needling is showing the most promise for “best practice” models in a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. This is the Osteopractic approach in essence—the combination of spinal manipulation (SMT-1\, SMT-2\, SMT-3 & SMT-4)\, extremity manipulation (EMT-1)\, and dry needling (DN-1 & DN-2) for the evidence-based treatment of neuromusculoskeletal conditions. \n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: Friday\, October 4th 202412:00PM – 8:00PM Friday\, October 5th 20248:00AM – 6:30PM Friday\, October 6th 20248:00AM – 3:30PM Where: Spooner Uptown Chandler1351 N. His enthusiasm for physical therapy ignited during this time\, which led him to join Spooner as a Physical Therapist in 2015. Brad is dedicated to providing exceptional care and ensuring a positive experience for every patient who walks through the clinic’s doors. \n\n\n\nIn 2014\, Brad was given the opportunity to travel to Guatemala to provide pro-bono physical therapy to the underserved. This rewarding experience set him on a path of wanting to serve those who do not normally have access to physical therapy. His dream is to continue helping the underserved\, both internationally and locally\, and he looks forward to returning to Guatemala in the future. \n\n\n\nOne of Brad’s favorite parts of being a physical therapist is not only helping a person regain their function\, but also having the opportunity to connect with patients and build relationships.
