Losing a limb is a challenge most of us never want to face, but for many it is a reality. Life after losing a limb requires a lot of effort to relearn movements and compensate for a prosthetic. Patients have to learn to trust their new prosthetic and regain their confidence. Emily White, a patient at Spooner Peoria, shared her story and the physical and emotional recovery process after losing a limb.

Meet Emily White

In May 2020, Emily lost her left leg in an automobile accident. After coming out of surgery she struggled with regaining her confidence and was very uncomfortable. She faced difficulty with simple movement, like walking, and needed to completely relearn how to move and balance. After meeting Megan Hull, PT, DPT and Myisha Coston, all three went to work to help Emily regain what she had lost. Emily formed a strong relationship with her therapist, Megan, over the course of her physical therapy and trusted her guidance at every step.

Just 5 months after her accident, Emily is ready to graduate from physical therapy. Megan has helped immensely with integrating Emily’s new prosthetic into her life. Not only has she regained the ability to walk but she has her confidence back. Emily is ready to take on the next chapter of her life with a new prosthetic leg and a new partner in movement.

Spooner Physical Therapy is dedicated to helping patients who experience limb loss to move comfortably and confidently. Our specialized team of physical therapists can perform K-Level Evaluations right in the clinic and help advocate for patients in the process of identifying a prosthetic that is made to meet their movement goals.
