Pelvic floor dysfunction can be associated with frustration, pain, tension and weakness, and disruption to your everyday life. Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common dysfunction associated with the pelvic floor. What is urinary incontinence? UI is defined as a “loss of bladder control” or “urinary leakage.” If you have UI, you are not alone. Millions of people develop this problem as they age; however, it is estimated only 25% of individuals struggling with incontinence seek medical treatment.

This can be a sensitive topic for both women and men, that isn’t discussed enough. In fact, most of us believe this is a normal part of the aging process. Is it a common problem? Sure. But should you accept this as your new normal? Absolutely not! Many are unaware that physical therapy rehabilitation can improve a patient’s quality of life and resolve incontinence by targeting pelvic floor dysfunction.

The role of physical therapy in treating urinary incontinence

Physical therapists who are trained in pelvic floor rehab use a variety of methods to help assess and correct pelvic floor dysfunction. For urinary incontinence, this includes:

  • Determining the type of incontinence (stress, urge, or both)
  • Measuring your strength and mobility
  • Assessing the motor control and endurance of the pelvic floor muscles

Once this evaluation is complete, your therapist can make an individualized plan of care specific to your needs.

When it comes to pelvic floor dysfunction, research has shown that individuals who receive expert care and perform pelvic floor exercises correctly are more likely to experience the optimal outcomes they are looking for! Therefore, it is imperative for men and women to seek trained and specialized healthcare providers that will show you the correct intervention for you.
