What is Force Plate Testing?
Force Plate Testing uses advanced technology to measure how your body produces, absorbs, and transfers force during movements such as jumping, landing, and squatting. By analyzing these movements, Force Plate Testing provides objective data on strength, power, movement efficiency, and side-to-side asymmetries that may impact performance or increase injury risk.
The information gathered helps identify opportunities to improve athletic performance, monitor training progress, and guide return-to-sport decisions following injury. Whether you’re a competitive athlete, active adult, or recovering from an injury, Force Plate Testing provides valuable insights that traditional assessments often cannot detect.
How Force Plate Testing Works
Our VALD Force Plates contain highly sensitive sensors that measure the intensity, direction, and timing of forces exerted by your body during movement. During your assessment, you’ll complete a series of tests that may include vertical jumps, single-leg jumps, squats, landing assessments, and balance tests.
These tests allow us to evaluate key performance metrics such as:
- Power production
- Jump performance
- Landing mechanics
- Rate of force development
- Left-to-right limb symmetry
- Movement efficiency
Following testing, you’ll meet with a sports performance specialist to review your results, understand how they compare to established benchmarks, and receive personalized recommendations to improve performance, reduce injury risk, or support your return-to-sport goals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Force Plate Testing is beneficial for athletes and active individuals of all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re a competitive athlete, weekend warrior, runner, cyclist, or recovering from an injury, Force Plate Testing provides objective insights into how your body produces, absorbs, and transfers force during movement.
These assessments are especially valuable for individuals looking to:
- Improve athletic performance
- Identify strength and power imbalances
- Reduce injury risk
- Monitor recovery following injury or surgery
- Track progress during training
- Assess fatigue and readiness for competition
Force Plate Testing is particularly useful for athletes participating in sports that require speed, power, jumping, cutting, and rapid changes of direction.
Force Plate Testing is considered a performance assessment and is not typically covered by health insurance.
However, some Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) may allow reimbursement for these services. We recommend checking with your HSA or FSA provider to determine eligibility and reimbursement requirements.
Testing typically requires 15–20 minutes, followed by a comprehensive review of your results with a sports performance specialist. During this consultation, you’ll learn what your data means, how it compares to performance benchmarks, and how it relates to your individual goals.
The session will take approximately 30 minutes.
Wear comfortable workout clothing and athletic shoes suitable for jumping, squatting, and balance activities.
To ensure the most accurate results, we recommend arriving well-hydrated and avoiding strenuous lower-body exercise immediately before testing whenever possible.
Following your assessment, you’ll receive a detailed report outlining key performance metrics such as:
- Strength and power output
- Jump performance
- Landing mechanics
- Left-to-right limb symmetry
- Force production and absorption characteristics
You’ll review these results with a sports performance specialist who will explain what the data means and provide personalized recommendations to help improve performance, reduce injury risk, and support your training or rehabilitation goals.
Regular testing allows you to track changes over time, measure the effectiveness of your training program, monitor recovery from injury, and identify opportunities for continued improvement.
Absolutely. Force Plate Testing is commonly used to monitor recovery and identify movement deficits that may not be visible during traditional assessments.
The objective data can help athletes and healthcare professionals evaluate strength, power, and movement symmetry throughout the rehabilitation process and support informed return-to-sport decisions.
Yes. Following your assessment, you’ll receive a detailed report outlining your performance metrics, areas of strength, opportunities for improvement, and recommendations based on your goals. This report will be sent via email and can also be shared with coaches, trainers, or healthcare providers if desired.
